1999 and NBC Poppy Red lives on. Amongst the last doubledeckers purchased before NBC
standards took control of the vehicle specifications for the East Kent fleet, were these Park Royal
bodied Daimler Fleetlines - East Kent having waited some time before deciding what could
successfully follow its fleet of AEC deckers. The vehicle is seen here in the company of others
at the Cryers Hill yard near Wycombe. The National is believed to be ex Stagecoach East Kent.

Then along came the NBC standard Bristol VRTSL3 - except East Kent had the rare highbridge variant, with the wide white waistband all round the bus. here is 7046 (MFN46R) on route to Hastings. |

As if highbridge VRs were not unusual enough, how about Willowbrook bodied ones? East Kent shared NBC deliveries of these boxy deckers with the Northern Group. Cardiff City also bought some. They did have a reputation for leaking in the wet which is perhaps why some of them ended up on the London Sightseeing Tour. Here is 7020 (PJJ20S). |
