Yarra Trams Bombardier Flexity Swift Class E 6001
Yarra Trams has bought its first new trams in a decade. The network had been extended, the ridership had grown and the fleet was soldiering on. Now fifty Class E trams are on their way, 6001 the first, seen here at South Melbourne Station on the reserved track from the city to St Kilda just before Christmas 2013 after a month in service. The Bombardier Flexity Swift trams are assembled in Melbourne at Dandenong with running gear from Germany. Melbourne's last new trams were the Siemens Combino five section D2 class. They are 29.85m long and seat 58. The new Bombardiers are replacing them on the 96 between St Kilda and Brunswick, the three section trams seat 65 and are 33.45m long with room for 150 standees. The first trams were over a year last arriving and all were due for delivery by 2017, with an option on a further 100. The first five were in service over the 2013/2014 Christmas New Year period, a sixth has been on test since then, but no more seen through to Easter 2014.

The 96's main route through the city is the length of Bourke Street from Southern Cross to Parliament via the Bourke Street mall. Here 6001 is seen about half way from the mall to Southern Cross Station just before Christmas 2013.

On the corner of Flinders and Spencer Streets is this art piece paying a lop sided homage to Melbourne's Class W trams. A friend who is a native of the city thought it was representing a Melbourne suburban train which had fallen off the elevated track overhead! The picture was taken in April 2016 and 6001 is passing by on Spencer Street on route 96.
