Under the Auckland Bay Bridge, across from the Central Quay and to the north is Birkenhead, accessible by none other than the Birkenhead Ferry. A far cry from the 'Ferry Across the Mersey' - and these days more frequent. Birkenhead Transport operate services in that area and a service which comes over the Bay Bridge into Downtown Auckland. However, if you cross on the ferry, don't expect to see fleets of Birkenhead Transport buses waiting to whisk you away - prepare for a long walk, and uphill! The fleet used to be Bedford based, and not surprisingly switched to GM's Japanese associate Isuzu. Number 18 is leaving Auckland and displays the open luggage side paniers which have featured on vehicles in the fleet for many years - and, as the photos below show, have been retained on the latest low-floor models. |
