Kinetic Optare Solo SR 6037 QANTAS
Its always a bit jarring to arrive in Australia from the UK to be greeted by something as familiar as an Optare Solo SR. This example is lettered for QANTAS and in use on a Staff Shuttle at the internationla terminal of Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport. QANTAS do not own the Solo it has been contracted from Kinetic's Sydney operation, formerly known as Telfords, so it is 6037 (TV794A) in their fleet. The UK connection here is less obvious, but Telfords was acquired by members of the Nottingham based Dunn family behind what is now Rotala. The Sydney Dunns also acquired bus manufacturers Custom Coaches in Sydney - briefly owned by Alexander Dennis - and Queensland based Denning so they sold Telfords to concentate on the bus building side. Kinetic grew out of the Skybus operation in Melbourne which has spread to other airports around the country and New Zealand. In recent years Kinetic acquired 51% of the UK's Go-Ahead Group, NZBus in New Zealand, taken on the former Trandsev contracted operations in Melbourne as well as expanding its operation in Queensland and moving into Tasmania. Solo 6037 started with Skybus in Melbourne as 35 (7099AO) in 2014 on the Hotel Shuttles meeting the Bustech CDi deckers from the airport at Southern Cross Station. The bus also served the Adelaide and Gold Coast operations, including another spell back in Melbourne with rego BS04NK. In Queensland it was 876XSV and XS59DR in Adelaide. Where to next?
