Almost worthy of an Agatha Christie mystery is this Leyland Tiger PS1, AHL694. The livery and registration almost immediately suggest a former West Riding vehicle, which in turn would suggest Roe bodywork. The reality is that the body on AHL694 was built in 1947 by the small Barnaby firm in Hull. The original operator was Bullocks of Featherstone who numbered the bus 284. The company should not be confused with Bullocks in Manchester, though they did give birth to South Yorkshire Transport in Pontefract. The Bullocks was a long established operator in West Yorkshire, dating back to the 1890s and also became a keen Leyland operator, they did however sell out to their chief competitor, West Riding, in 1951. The South Yorskshire operation survived as an independent operation until 1994, and like West Riding is now subsumed in Arriva operations in the area. The bus now enjoys a peaceful life on a summer service, AC1, from Paignton to the Greenway Estate, holiday home to the late Dame Agatha Christie, now owned by the National Trust. Thanks to Ed Goodridge for the image.
