Foothill Transit New Flyer XHE40 & NABI BRT 42CNG 2118
It was hoped that this would be a picture of one of Los Angeles based Foothill Transit's Alexander Dennis Enviro500EV battery electric doubledeckers. They have the only two in the USA, 3000 and 3001. When last visiting LA in November 2019 they were still on their way from Falkrk and the second visit in May 2020 was torpedoed by covid, which also delayed the Enviros entering service until January 2021. With the aid of an interactive online map, kindly provided by Foothill Transit it was possible to track individual buses on their Silver Streak service between Downtown LA and Montclair, which is where the Enviros were expected to be, however the buses primarily in use were New Flyer Xcelsior XN60, CNG powered artics delivered in 2020. The online locator can be found here. Despite journeying out on the Silver Streak to Ponoma and the Ponoma depot there was no sign of the deckers. On the plus side the latest "green" deliveries were much in evidence, a batch of twenty hydrogen powered New Flyer Xcelsior XHE40 buses like 3103 seen here in Ponoma Bus Station with one of the large fleet of over 100 NABI 42CNG gas powered buses, F2118, new in 2013. Both buses are typical of the fleet's smart presentation. Other Xcelsior buses in the hydrogen fleet have less colourful graphics, more plainly stating their green credentials. Visible above the ear of the Xcelsior is one of the overhead gantries used to recharge their first Proterra electric buses, though battery technology has come some way since 2010 and longer ranges are possible without recharge, The other good news in liaison with Foothill Transit is that an order for 24 Enviro500EV is imminent which should render the Silver Streak service 100% electric. Hopefully we will be back for photos - and a ride - sometime in the future.
